  • 1st Annual - Rally in the Valley

PMBA and IMBA present the 1st Annual Rally in the Valley

The Philadelphia Mountain Biking Association, with the cooperation of the Fairmount Park Commission and the Friends of the Wissahickon, is hosting a mountain bike ride event.

The Rally in the Valley is not a race, but a fun ride at your own pace through the beautiful and challenging Wissahickon Valley Park to support a great cause.

There will be 3 marked courses for beginners, intermediate and advanced riders. There will also be a kids area and a few obstacles for all riders to try their skill.

Half of the proceeds will be donated to the Friends of the Wissahickon to support their ongoing effort to repair, maintain and rebuild the trails, as well as to benefit the long-term goal to redesign many existing unsustainable trails and bring them up to sustainable standards.

    • Registration for the event will start at 8am and close at 10:30am.

    • Riders can proceed onto courses at their leisure.
    • Prizes from the sponsors will be raffled away starting at 1pm.  All paying participants have a great chance to win biking swag.  There is lots and lots of stuff to give away!!!!

    • Helmets are mandatory for all participants.

*Registration is at Northwestern Ave. entrance to park, right off Germantown Ave. in Lafayette Hill, close to Chestnut Hill College. Google Map "W Northwestern Ave, 19118"

Donation is $20 for adults, kids 12 and under are free with paying adult.

  • FOW Work Day - March

FOW March Work Day - A few knucklesThank you all very much for coming out on Saturday March 10th to help continue our efforts to restore Houston Meadows! We got a great deal of work done and appreciate everyone's effort. Together we put in 91(!) hours of volunteer labor on top of FPC's contribution. A lot of trees were cut and chipped, a lot of Devil's Walking Stick uprooted, a lot of glass picked up. Great to see so many new faces including people from Courtesy Stables, and another great outpouring of support from PMBA! Together we will continue to make the Wissahickon a better place for both the people who visit it and the plants and animals that live there.

MARCH 24, 2007: PMBA's first event was a success! About 55 bikers gathered at the Belmont Plateau for a massive group photo.

Riders of all ages and walks of life showed up with bikes of all types, sizes, dimensions and conflagurations. There were group rides and a few derby's. The sun came out and it was a beautiful day!

Thanks very much to Trophy Bikes of Philadelphia!

Volunteers used chainsaws, bow saws and sheers to tear out the unwanted elements and put them through a shredder. Remaining stumps were sprayed in order to prohibit them from coming back to life.

While FOW has long been a driving force behind volunteer maintenance at Wiss, the newly formed PMBA is hoping to bolster efforts to keep the park and it's multi-user trail systems groomed for everyone to use by encouraging it's members to volunteer for these monthly work days. The work was hard, but the rewards will be a better maintained recreation area and trail system, and hopefully better relationships between the diverse communities that use the park.

    PMBA members in attendance included:

    Chris Hunter

It's true. Despite many miles of amazing trails throughout city parks, and a large community of people who ride mountain bikes, the Philadelphia area is one of the largest metro areas in the United States with a noticeable lack of a dedicated organization representing area mountain bikers.

    But that's changing.

Back in October of 2006, the Friends of Wissahickon, a local advocacy group that "...conserves forest and creek, restores trails and preserves the [Wissahickon] Park's historical structures." brought IMBA to town in an effort to build a demonstration trail project in the park. Such an endeavor would help local mountain bikers at least recognize the importance of trail stewardship, if not inspire them to lend a hand. It was a successful venture, and helped local riders establish a more solid rapport with non-riders in the park. And of course, the Philadelphia Mountain Biking Association was born.
