Mountain Bike Philly is an opportunity to explore beautiful Wissahickon Park on your hybrid or mountain bike, and to get a taste of some of the best urban mountain biking in the country. Descriptions of theses guided rides are provided below and will cover all riding abilities. Guided rides will leave from Pachella Field on Henry Avenue at Livezy Street between 4:30 and 5:30 PM on Friday, September 10. Helmets are required and preregistration is requested to allow planning for the number of participants. See the registration form below. There’s no cost to participate in this event.
This event is organized and sponsored by the Philadelphia Mountain Biking Association, a non-profit club dedicated to enhancing the riding experience of mountain bikers through group rides, skills clinics and trail maintenance projects. As part of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia’s “Bike Weekend”, this event complements the Schuylkill Scenic Century road ride on Saturday and the Bike Philly event on Sunday. Level 4 - You have a mountain bike and know how to ride it, but are not familiar with the Wissahickon or you are looking to meet other riders. This ride is for the experienced, intermediate rider who just wants to get out and ride with a group of new people. The ride will be 8-12 miles daylight permitting. No one will be left behind, but everyone will be encouraged to push their limits. No hybrids please.
Level 3 - So you have a mountain bike and you manage to hit the trails a couple times a year, but you are looking to expand your horizons a bit. This ride is for folks who have a basic level of experience riding on trails. The ride will be 5-8 miles daylight permitting and will include moderate elevation gain along with technical climbs and descents. Sections of the trail are challenging, but no one will be left behind and everyone will be encouraged to try something new. No hybrids please.
Level 2 - Do you have a mountain bike sitting in the garage but only manage to take it out to ride to the grocery store? This ride is for anyone who is looking for a basic introduction to mountain biking and the upper trails of the Wissahickon. The ride will be 3-5 miles depending on the level of the group and will include some rocky climbs and descents, small log crossings and other technical trail features that are indigenous to Wissahickon. While this trail has some challenging sections, the pace will accommodate riders of all levels. The ride will run from Pachella Field to Wises Mill Rd. and back with a possibility to add more distance if daylight permits. This ride is suitable for anyone with a mountain bike. No hybrids please.
Level 1 - Come out for a scenic tour of the Wissahickon. This ride will travel along the Wissahickon Creek on Forbidden Drive and is suitable of all levels. The ride will be about 5 miles in length and will consist of wide dirt and gravel roads with limited elevation change. All bikes are suitable for this ride.
