April 2010 volunteer trail work day!

Saturday, April 24th 2010, was another successful volunteer trail work day for PMBA, with two energetic groups working on two separate areas as part of the STI Project.

A crew of over 20 volunteers spent over 60 man hours clearing a proposed trail corridor for the Summit Ave Bypass Trail. The crew cleared an additional 800 linear feet of invasive plants from a 50 ft wide swath of under story along the proposed trail corridor. Including PMBA's January & March's volunteer trail days, this is over 2400 linear feet of corridor cleared!!!!!! This effort will be followed by an herbicide application by the FPC, and will allow PMBA to layout a proposed trail tread for review and approval by the city. Stay tuned as this progresses, and hopefully approvals will keep pace allowing us to return to this area for some more work soon.

The Summit Ave Bypass is a proposed trail that would alleviate the need for all park users, such as equestrians, hikers, and cyclists, to travel along Summit Ave, which is dangerous, and will add approximately 1 mile of trail which will link up with the existing yellow trail on both ends. (See attached sketch.)

The other PMBA crew of 10 volunteers, worked on the "Golf Course Climb" Reroute in support of the trail relocation due to a FPC gully restoration project.  The gully restoration is part of a larger effort to remediate areas of the park that are eroding quickly, and degrading the water quality of the Wissahickon Creek.  This approximate 1/2 mile re-route is being tackled by an experienced PMBA crew, with FOW's support of equipment, and FPC's supply of large rocks.  On Saturday, the rough cut of the trail was completed with the SK500 machine, while another crew continued to work on rock steps, and rock pitching on some of the more technical sections of the route.

Supporting the GCC, will be an ongoing effort for PMBA over the next several months, and we encourage all who have the time and energy, to show up on weekly Tuesday night volunteer efforts sponsored by FOW, and led by PMBA volunteers.  Tuesday nights start at 5:30 PM, weather permitting, and continue until dark. Check here for up to date information if weather makes us change things.
